Did You Know About Physiotherapy for Babies?
Neurodevelopmental Physiotherapy: Early Support for Your Baby’s Development
It’s natural to have questions if your baby seems uncomfortable with movement, dislikes tummy time, or isn’t meeting early milestones. Neurodevelopmental physiotherapy is a gentle, specialized approach that supports babies in building the strength, coordination, and confidence they need to move and explore their world.
At Boomerang Health, our physiotherapy team is here to support families from the very beginning, especially when a baby’s early journey includes prematurity or time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
What Is Neurodevelopmental Physiotherapy?
Neurodevelopmental physiotherapy supports babies and toddlers in developing movement skills across all stages, from early abilities like head control and rolling to more advanced milestones such as sitting, crawling, standing, and walking. Each skill builds on the next, creating a strong foundation for functional movement.
Our physiotherapy sessions are play-based, hands-on, and tailored to your baby’s needs. We follow your baby’s cues and integrate strategies into everyday routines, making it both effective and manageable for families.
Which Babies Can Benefit?
Many babies benefit from early physiotherapy, including those who:
- Were born prematurely or spent time in the NICU
- Dislike or struggle with tummy time
- Show delays in milestones like head control, rolling, sitting, crawling or walking
- Prefer looking to one side or have a flat spot on their head
- Feel stiff or floppy when handled
- Seem uncomfortable or frustrated during movement
Even mild concerns are worth addressing early; education and small changes can make a big difference.
Developmental Support Following Prematurity or Neonatal Intensive Care
Babies who were born early or required NICU care often need extra support as they grow. Their early medical experiences can impact strength, tolerance for positions, and overall gross motor development.
You might notice your baby tires easily, struggles with certain positions, or has difficulty lifting their head. Physiotherapy helps by gently building strength, improving comfort, and supporting development based on their corrected age.
Equally important, we guide caregivers on how to handle, position, and play with their baby in ways that promote progress and confidence.
What If My Baby Hates Tummy Time?
This is one of the most common concerns—and one we support often.
Tummy time is important, but it can be challenging for many reasons. Particularly for premature babies, babies with reflux or digestive issues, babies with positional preferences or tightness or those who find the position uncomfortable. Instead of forcing or avoiding it, we take a gradual approach:
- Starting with supported positions (on your chest or lap)
- Using short, frequent practice periods
- Incorporating toys, mirrors, and interaction
- Adjusting positioning to make it easier and more enjoyable
Our goal is to help you and your baby feel successful, turning tummy time into a positive experience over time.
Why Early Intervention Matters
The first year of life is a critical period for development. Babies’ brains and bodies are highly adaptable, meaning earlier support can have a lasting impact.
Starting physiotherapy early can:
- Encourage more typical movement patterns
- Prevent compensations or asymmetries
- Improve comfort and participation in daily activities
- Build a strong foundation for future milestones
Often, early guidance doesn’t require long-term physiotherapy—but it can significantly change a baby’s developmental path.
What to Expect at Boomerang Health
Our approach is gentle, individualized, and family-centered. Sessions focus on:
- Understanding your baby’s needs and your concerns
- Hands-on guidance and positioning strategies
- Practical techniques you can use at home
- Building your confidence as a caregiver
We aim to make physiotherapy feel supportive, not overwhelming.
When Should You Reach Out?
The earlier, the better, especially if you are noticing any of the following:
- Difficulty lifting or turning their head during tummy time by 2–3 months
- Strong preference for looking or turning to one side, or a developing flat spot on the head
- Very stiff or very floppy when being held or moved
- Delays in reaching milestones such as rolling, sitting, or crawling
- Limited movement on one side of the body or using one arm/leg less than the other
If you have concerns or questions regarding your baby’s movement ability or are looking to gain more confidence in supporting your baby’s milestones, a neurodevelopmental assessment can provide reassurance and clear next steps. Early support can have a meaningful impact, both on your baby’s development and on your comfort in supporting their growth.
Neurodevelopmental physiotherapy is about meeting babies where they are and helping them move forward, one small step (or wiggle) at a time.
