Dr. Carmelinda Longo
Dr. Longo is a clinical neuropsychologist who is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. She is also a member of the Canadian Psychological Association and the National Academy of Neuropsychology.
Dr. Longo’s main area of practice includes conducting comprehensive neuropsychological assessments with children, adolescents and adults. In this capacity, she assesses for the presence and severity of any cognitive, academic, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties associated with various acquired brain injuries and medical conditions including stroke, anoxia, epilepsy, brain tumours, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and concussion. She also conducts psychoeducational and psychological assessments to help diagnose Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Giftedness, Anxiety, Depression and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). She provides oral and written feedback to clients, their families and support staff about assessment outcomes and offers recommendations with a particular emphasis on cognitive compensation strategies targeting executive dysfunction, memory impairments, learning challenges and attention issues. Her assessments are informed by evidence-based practice and guided by up-to-date research in the field of neuropsychology and neuroscience.
Dr. Longo also provides psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and insomnia to child, adolescents and young adults using a primarily cognitive behavioural (CBT) approach. She has a special interest in working with youth with mild traumatic brain injury, where she provides psychoeducation and supportive reassurance about concussion symptoms, expectation of recovery and strategies for symptom reduction.
Prior to joining Boomerang Health, Dr. Longo held a research position at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) conducting neurocognitive assessments on children with brain tumours. She currently completes comprehensive neuropsychological and developmental assessments on children from Bermuda through SickKids’ International Patient Program.
Dr. Longo completed her Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology at the University of Ottawa and spent two years completing a clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral fellowship at Community Head Injury Resource Services, where she worked primarily with adults with traumatic brain injury conducting neuropsychological and medical legal assessments. Her pre-doctoral internship was completed at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) where she specialized in pediatric neuropsychology. She also completed clinical training at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), Children’s Aid Society, Elizabeth-Bruyere Hospital and Lesley Miller and Associates. Dr. Longo has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at professional conferences.
