Sport and Massage Therapy in Children

Did you know the Government of Canada recommends 60 minutes of medium to intense physical activity a day for your child?

Hockey, soccer, football, dance, or gymnastics are just a few of the sports your child may be active in. Some children are not only involved in one, but multiple sports whether recreationally or competitively.

Unfortunately, children can sometimes be involved in some type of sports injury. These could range from fractures, strains, sprains, whiplash, or even a concussion which could depend on the amount of contact in your child’s choice of sport.

It is important your children are seeking out the right therapies to allow for a full recovery and return to daily activity. However, more important than treating injuries once they already happen is to prevent them or decrease the likelihood that your child will become injured.  As a parent you might be wondering can a massage help my child enhance their sport performance and allow them to be less susceptible to an injury.  Yes!

Regular massage treatments will allow for an increased blood flow to the muscles resulting in less muscles tension, an increase in joint range of motion which can decrease overall stiffness, and cause a relaxation response. All of these benefits are sure to allow for muscles and joints to recover while decreasing post physical activity soreness and preparing your little athlete for the next sport event.

Aside from the endless benefits for your child, some of which include:

    • Improved sleep patterns
    • Stress reduction
    • Increased ability to concentrate and/or focus

Massage can help to repair some of those muscles often over used in kids who are very physically active.

These days’ children often endure stresses and pressures to succeed when competing in sport. This emotional toll may be another indication that massage could be in order for your child. Not only does massage have many physical benefits but a massage is known to elicit a sense of calm and relaxation one in which is surely beneficial before a big game or sporting event.
